Johnny Witzke directed a devastating power play attack that scored five times and delivered the 200
th win in University of Mary hockey program history. Witzke scored three goals and delivered two assists in the 3
rd ranked Marauders 6-2 win over visiting Waldorf University, completing a weekend sweep.
This is the UMary hockey program's sixth season. Head Coach Dan Huntley first led the Marauders onto the ice in September 2018 and ACHA D2 titles in 2021 and 2022.
The Marauders opened strong with a pair of first period goals in the program's annual Military Day game.
Jaren Hugelen scored UMary's only even strength goal of the night at the 5:06 mark. Witzke found the net with 18 seconds left in the first period for the first of five goals with a man advantage for the home team.
UMary entered intermission leading 2-0 before awarding the Marauders Military Night jerseys to 24 veterans of the United States armed forces.
Waldorf cut the Marauders advantage 5:01 into the second period before Witzke tallied twice, the first at 11:16 before scoring unassisted at 17:08.
In the third period Hugelen and
Tanner Eskro sandwiched the 4
th and 5
th power play goals of the game around a Waldorf goal by Brett Janssens with a man advantage.
The Marauders held a massive advantage on shots for the second straight night 61-16.
Kyle Hayden had 14 saves for UMary. Jordan Berschiminsky had 55 for the Warriors.
Eskro had one goal and three assists for UMary. Hugelen had two goals and an assist.
The Marauders are 8-3-0-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOW-SOL) overall and 5-0-0-0-1 in MCH play. The Warriors are 2-15-0-0-2 overall and 2-8 in MCH action.
UMary next competes at McKendree University in O'Fallon, IL, on Nov. 17-18.
