NSIC honors Malone as Defensive Player of the Week

BURNSVILLE, MN – A big weekend in all facets of the game earned University of Mary co-captain Mo Malone Northern Sun Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors as she led the Marauders to a weekend sweep. Malone had a game-winning goal against Concordia-St. Paul and assisted on the game-winner against Winona State University.

The junior defender capped a stunning comeback in the Marauders 2-1 win over Concordia-St. Paul as UMary was held scoreless until the 88th minute. Malone drilled a 25 yard direct free kick just inside the left post with 62 seconds on the clock to win the game.

The native of Placentia, CA, then delivered a helper on the Marauders first goal of the game in a 2-0 win over Winona State.

Malone also played a big role in UMary shutting down the opponent's attack. The Marauders limited the Golden Bears to four shots (two on frame) and eight for the Warriors (2 on frame).

This is the first time the 2022 All-NSIC 2nd team performer has earned weekly honors from the Northern Sun. This is also the first time the Marauders have had a player earn weekly honors this season.

For the season Malone has two goals and leads the team with five assists and nine points. She leads the NSIC in assists/game (.33), is eighth in game-winning goals (2) and 13th in points.

The Marauders have won four straight games – all at home – and jumped into the playoff picture. UMary is tied for 7th in the NSIC standings with three games remaining, all on the road. The Marauders next play at the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Oct. 27, before playing at Wayne State on Sunday, Oct. 29.
