BISMARCK, ND – Taking advantage of a pair of fortuitous bounces and another impressive defensive performance, the University of Mary women's soccer team finished a sweep of their 4-game home stand and continued their surge up the Northern Sun standings. Behind a brace of goals by
Olivia Gardner, the Marauders downed visiting Winona State University 2-0 in UMary's final scheduled home game of the year.
Spending the first half fighting into a strong wind, the Marauders struck early.
Mo Malone hammered a long ball towards the Warriors goal with Gardner sprinting in pursuit. Gardner barely beat Winona State goalkeeper Alyson Jumper in a race to the ball for a quick touch that went off Jumper and kept rolling towards the goal. Continuing in pursuit, Gardner got a second touch in the goal box to direct the ball into the left side of the net less than 10 minutes into the game.
Gardner, who had rocketed at least five shots off the frame this season, took advantage of another beneficial carom to score her second goal of the day in the 52
nd minute of play.
MaLiah Burke, who chased down the ball before the endline to the right of the goal, crossed the ball towards Gardner at the top of the 8 yard box. Burke's pass deflected off both a Warriors defender and Jumper. And once again Gardner was in the right spot at the right time. Fighting through a defender, Gardner rolled a shot just inside the left post for her fourth counter of the season and seal the Marauders win.
UMary's defense ensured the two-goal advantage would hold, allowing just eight shots total with only two on net.
Molly Fischer made two saves to earn her sixth clean sheet of the season.
The Marauders (6-6-3 overall, 5-4-2 NSIC) finished with the edge in shots (11-8) and shots on frame (5-2) while the Warriors (2-7-5, 1-6-4) held a slight advantage in corner kicks (3-2) and fouls (13-9).
UMary remains in a 3-way tie for 7
th place in the NSIC standings, equaling the 17 points held by Concordia-St. Paul – who the Marauders defeated 2-1 on Friday – and Wayne State College.
Three regular season contests remain on the schedule for UMary. Next up for the Marauders is a visit to the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Oct. 27, before playing at Wayne State on Sunday, Oct. 29.
