Freimuth tallies twice as Marauders extend win streak to 5 with 4-0 rout of Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Grace Freimuth posted a brace of goals as the visiting University of Mary women's soccer team rolled over the University of Sioux Falls 4-0. The victory extended the Marauders win streak to five games and jumped the Marauders into a tie for sixth place in the Northern Sun standings.

The Marauders have won their last two meetings with the Cougars by identical 4-0 scores.

With two games remaining in the regular season, the Marauders are 7-6-3 overall and 6-4-2 in the NSIC, tied for 6th place with 20 points. With road games remaining at Wayne State College on Sunday, October 29 at 12 noon, and a trip to Northern State University on Thursday, November 2, the Marauders could finish as high as third place or as low as ninth place. The top eight teams in the final standings qualify for the NSIC tournament with the top four teams hosting the opening round. Wayne State is currently tied for 8th with 18 points. Northern State is third with 23 points.

Freimuth took advantage of a Cougars mistake to score the only goal of the first half in the 31st minute of play. In pursuit of the ball, Cougars goaltender Caroline Titze came off her line 25 yards downfield and collided with one of her defenders. Freimuth picked up the deflection and outraced all pursuers to find a clean angle before depositing the ball into the vacant net from 15 yards out.

The Marauders doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Freimuth fired a shot from the left side of the penalty area into the low right corner of the net.

Olivia Gardner got into the scoring frenzy with her team-leading 5th goal of the season in the 69th minute. Taking a cross from the right side of the pitch from MaLiah Burke, Gardner beat Titze to the ball just outside the goal box for the third Marauders goal of the night.

A tremendous effort by Ashlyn Davison closed the scoring. Stepping in front of a Cougars pass 45 yards out, Davison sprinted towards the Sioux Falls goal. Fifteen yards in front of the frame, Davison made an inside move with the ball and fired a shot through a grouping of three defenders into the lower left side of the net passed a diving Titze for her first collegiate counter.

The Marauders dominated the stat sheet, holding edges in shots (16-5), shots on frame (11-3) and corner kicks.

Molly Fischer made three saves for UMary to earn her seventh clean sheet of the season.
