Malone delivers improbable win as Marauders rally past Golden Bears 2-1

BISMARCK, ND – A furious rally featuring two goals in the last three minutes of play led the University of Mary to a 2-1 win over visiting Concordia-St. Paul. Taking advantage of a pair of fouls committed by the Golden Bears, Ava Vizenor converted a penalty kick before Mo Malone won the contest on a free kick.

Despite another tremendous defensive effort by the Marauders in limiting the Golden Bears to just four shots all night, with only two on frame, Concordia-St. Paul opened the scoring with a goal in the 62nd minute.

Held to just a single shot early in the second half, the Marauders found their stride with time running out.

The Marauders kept applying pressure and nearly evened the game in the 86th minute. Finding her way to the top of the goal box, Grace Freimuth just missed finding the equalized as her header attempt from a beautifully played cross was saved by Golden Bears goalkeeper Jessi Jordan.

With UMary continuing to press and creating havoc in front of the Concordia-St. Paul net, a Golden Bears defender was called for a handball on the goal line, awarding the Marauders a penalty kick. With 2:59 showing on the clock Vizenor drilled the ball into the upper left corner of the net to tie the game.

Less than two minutes later, the Golden Bears fouled Olivia Gardner on a shot attempt. Awarded a free kick, the Marauders turned the opportunity over to Malone. Lining up from 25 yards out towards the left side of the penalty area, the Marauders team co-captain hooked a shot just inside the left post with 62 seconds left in the game to deliver UMary an improbable win.

The Marauders (5-6-3, 4-4-2 NSIC) held the advantage in shots (10-4), shots on target (8-2) and corner kicks (4-1). The Golden Bears (6-6-2, 4-4-2 NSIC) were whistled for 14 fouls to five for the Marauders.

The UMary win pulls the Marauders even with the Golden Bears and Wayne State College for 7th place in the NSIC standings with 14 points each. The top eight teams qualify for the NSIC tournament.

The Marauders wrap up their regular season home schedule on Sunday, October 22, when the Marauders host Winona State University. Game time is 1 pm at the Sanford Sports Complex adjacent to Legacy High School.
