BISMARCK, ND - The University of Mary Women's Basketball team (11-6, 10-4 NSIC) completed their second straight home series sweep Saturday night. Following an impressive Friday night victory over Upper Iowa, UMary handled business once again in a 75-49 win over Winona State University (9-11, 3-11 NSIC). The Marauders did not trail once during the weekend and are now riding high on a three-game winning streak.
Addison Rozell opened the scoring with a layup 2:26 into the game. Shooting started slow for both teams, but the Marauders still created separation with a 13-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Marauders entered halftime on a 9-0 run, leading the Warriors 26-11.
Megan Zander led all scorers with seven points and helped increase the lead towards the end of the second. While the Marauders only shot 29.4% from the field in the first half, their defense suffocated the Warriors on the other end of the court, holding them to a 16.7% first-half shooting percentage and 0-9 from three-point range.
The offense began to pick up for both sides in the third quarter. Lauren Fech put up eight points in the third, with Alex Dornfeld and Lindsey Hahn adding six points each to rejuvenate the Warriors. The Marauders still kept a comfortable distance, leading 50-38 entering the fourth quarter thanks to a pair of
Megan Voit threes and seven other Marauders contributing to the scoreboard.
After Kaitlyn Schrimpf got Winona back within ten points at the 6:22 mark, the Marauders halted any comeback hopes with an impressive onslaught of scores. Four separate runs and a 25-11 scoring difference in the fourth would put away the Warriors for good in a 75-49 final score.
UMary hit 27 of 64 shots (42.2%) while Winona State made 20 of 59 (33.9%). One of the better three-point shooting teams in the NSIC, the Warriors were held to only 4 of 23 on treys. The Marauders played another tough defensive game, winning the rebound matchups 44 to 37 and forcing 14 turnovers. Saturday marks the fourth time the Marauders held their opponents to under 50 points in a game this season.
