Hayden, Petrie lead #1 Marauders past #19 Golden Eagles 1-0

MANDAN, ND – All-American Kyle Hayden and a rock-ribbed defensive unit made sure a first period Caleb Petrie power play goal was all the scoring #1 University of Mary needed to defeat visiting #19 University of Minnesota Crookston. The Marauders extended their win streak to seven with a 1-0 victory over the Golden Eagles in a Monday matinee.

Hayden, the reigning American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2 Player of the Year, posted 25 saves in the win. The shutout increased his single season record to ten and is the Marauders first whitewash of an opponent in 2023. As a team it is UMary's 12th shutout of the season.

Taking advantage of a Golden Eagles penalty midway through the first period, the Marauders power play continues to perform with precision. Working the puck around the perimeter, Alex Flicek slipped a pass to Petrie at the bottom of the right circle. Left alone, the Bismarck, ND, native took advantage of a wide open net to bury the puck for his 11th goal of the season at the 12:55 mark. Isaiah Thomas also picked up an assist.

It was the Marauders only power play opportunity for the day as the Golden Eagles were whistled for one infraction. UMary also excelled on the penalty kill, holding UMC without a goal in four opportunities with a man advantage.

The Marauders specialty units have been spectacular during their seven-game win streak, scoring six goals in 21 power play opportunities. The penalty kill unit has been even better. Opponents have scored just once in 29 power play opportunities. Additionally the Marauders have scored six shorthanded goals.

Minnesota Crookston made a late attempt to pull even but Hayden stood strong. With 1:26 left in the game Hayden turned away a strong scoring opportunity with a glove save on a shot attempt from the left circle. With the face off in the Marauders defensive zone, UMC pulled its goalie but never found the net.

UMary finished with a 32-25 edge in shots. Jared Aamold finished with 32 saves for UMC.

The Marauders, the 2-time defending ACHA M2 national champions, improve to 27-4-1 with the win and now own a 5-0 lifetime record against the Golden Eagles. UMC is 16-3. The two teams are slated to play in Crookston, MN, on March 3-4.

UMary's current 4-game home stand concludes with a visit from the University of Jamestown ACHA M1 team on Wednesday, January 18. Game time is slated for 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink in Mandan, ND.
