MANDAN, ND – After needing a late goal to win the series opener, #1 University of Mary eliminated any need for a dramatic finish in game two against the University of Cincinnati by dominating both ends of the rink. Six Marauders scored goals and UMary more than tripled the Bearcats shot total in a 6-1 win that completed a weekend sweep.
Tanner Eskro and
Isaiah Thomas, who scored the winning goal with 1:25 remaining in a 6-5 win over the Bearcats Saturday, both posted a goal and an assist for UMary.
Neither team could find the net until
Alex Flicek delivered the game's first goal at 16:19 of the first period, using helpers from
Johnny Witzke and Thomas to deliver with a man advantage following a Bearcats penalty.
Just 59 seconds later, Eskro pounded home the puck to double the Marauders lead with assists from
Seth Cushing and
Drew Lenertz.
The assist from Cushing was a milestone moment for the Red Wing, MN, native as he became the third Marauder to reach 200 career points. Flicek is the Marauders all-time leader with 273 points and
Zach Garrett finished his career with 237.
The Bearcats broke onto the scoreboard just 15 seconds after the Eskro score, sending the Marauders into intermission with a 2-1 lead.
Thomas opened the scoring for the Marauders in the second. Knocking down a Bearcats attempt to clear the puck out of their zone in the right circle, Thomas skated in uncontested and fired a shot by Cincinnati goalkeeper Ian Cozby for an unassisted goal at 4:50.
The Marauders specialty units produced UMary's next two goals.
Teddy Lillico delivered the Marauders second power play goal of the game at 11:47 before
Caleb Petrie delivered a shorthanded goal at 16:10 to increase the UMary lead to an insurmountable 5-1 advantage.
Jacob Murray scored the lone goal of the third period at 13:03. It was the first goal of his Marauders career.
A night after holding a 52-26 edge in shots, the Marauders dominated the shot chart 66-20 in game two. All-American
Kyle Hayden posted 19 saves in the game for UMary. Cozby made 60 stops for Cincinnati.
The University of Mary wraps up three games in three days when the Marauders host the University of Minnesota Crookston in a matinee on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Face time is 2 pm on Monday, January 16, at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink.
