Time runs out on Warrens, Marauders in road loss to Vikings

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Time ran out for the University of Mary in the Marauders 77-70 road loss to Augustana University. Kam Warrens scored a career-high 26 points and led a late charge for the Marauders that pulled UMary within a pair of possessions of the Vikings in the final minute.
 
Cracking 20 points for the second straight games and the fifth time in eight games, Warrens led all players with 26. The senior wing drained four treys, connected on 8-of-15 shots overall and made all six free throws. Warrens also snared seven rebounds.
 
The Vikings scored first and played from in front the entire game. Down 18 in the opening half, the Marauders used a 12-0 run that featured five points each from Treyton Mattern and Ty Rogers to close within six. A Vikings trey with 35 seconds left in the first half sent Augie into intermission with a 35-26 lead.
 
Trailing 57-37 with 10:24 left in the game, the Marauders started clicking on both ends of the court. Using a 13-2 run capped by a three from Gunner Swanson, UMary closed within single digits at 59-50. Augie soon pushed their advantage back to 13 before Warrens scored seven points in a 9-2 run, bringing the Marauders within 69-63 and 1:38 to play. A Mattern 3-pointer with six seconds left brought UMary within 75-70 to close a 33-18 run that left UMary just short as time expired on the Marauders hopes of a comeback.
 
Mattern ended the night with 13 points, draining 3-of-5 from behind the arc. He also had three assists. Gertautas Urbonavicius added 11 points.
 
Jeremiah Jones came off the bench to deliver six assists while also scoring four points and collecting four rebounds.
 
Lucas Mayer had a game-high nine rebounds as the Marauders held a 40-32 edge on the boards.
 
Ryan Miller led Augie with 17 points. Jaden Graves added 15. The two combined to go 6-of-9 behind the arc as the Vikings went a combined 11-of-19 on 3s. UMary finished 9-of-23 on treys.
 
UMary (8-7 overall, 4-7 NSIC) had another strong night at the line, finishing 17-of-21 on free throws. Augie (8-9, 4-7) was 14-for-20. The Marauders shot 40.7% from the floor while the Vikings hit 44.1%.
 
The Marauders wrap up the weekend with a visit to Wayne State College on Saturday, January 14. Game time is 5:30 pm.
