BLAINE, MN – Scoring a single goal in all three periods was more than enough for the University of Mary hockey team in a 3-0 victory over Marian University that extended the Marauders winning streak to 23 games.
Playing a neutral site game on day one of the University of Minnesota Showcase, a trio of newcomers found the net for UMary in the Marauders first road contest of the season. UMary opened its 2022-23 scheduled at home last weekend, sweeping a pair of games from Waldorf University, and is now 3-0 this season.
In a penalty-filled contest, the Marauders opened the scoring late in the first period by converting a power play opportunity. With 3:58 on the clock,
Caleb Petrie slammed the puck home off a helper from
Garrett Freeman.
UMary doubled its lead to 2-0 at 12:13 of the second period when
Liam Massie scored with help from
Seth Cushing and
Andrew Huber.
Tucker Kruse, who has scored in all three UMary games this season, tallied his team-high 4
th goal 109 seconds into the final period.
Alex Flicek and Freeman provided the assists.
Kyle Hayden posted his first shutout of the season in his second start, stopping all 22 shots he faced in the game. Will McCreight stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced for Marian.
The Marauders were whistled for six penalties covering 20 minutes. Marian was cited 10 times for 36 minutes. UMary was 1-for-6 on the power play while Marian was 0-for-3 with a man advantage
The weekend hits its midpoint on Saturday, Oct. 1, when the Marauders face the host Gophers. The puck drops at 8 pm inside the Schwan Super Rink in St. Paul, MN.
