Freed leads Marauders effort in loss to Warriors

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary Volleyball team wrapped up its homestand Saturday afternoon, battling Winona State University tough but eventually falling in three sets (17-25, 14-25, 17-25). Maddy Freed continued to make good strides, setting the way for the Marauders with 25 assists earning ND Petroleum Foundation player of the game honors, and three of the Marauders top attackers finished with six kills apiece in Nehkyah Ellis, Maddie Cooper and Reyna Isenbart.

The Warriors were hot out of the gates in set one, earning the first six points. The Marauders would battle back to get within reach throughout the rest of the set, but the quick start would prove to be the deciding factor for Winona State, winning it 25-17.

UMary would gain their footing much earlier in set two, battling Winona State closely behind a balanced attack to a 14-11 score. However, in contrast to the hot start in set one, the Warriors would end set two going on a tear. An 11-3 run would give Winona State the set win, 25-14, and a 2-0 advantage.

The Marauders found themselves trailing once again 6-0 early in set three but would refuse to yield with a great late effort. The Marauders would hang on with a pair of 4-1 runs late in the set before the Warriors would eventually clinch the set 25-17, winning their second straight conference matchup on the weekend.
