BISMARCK, ND – The first collegiate goal for University of Mary forward
Olivia Gardner paired with another powerful defensive effort earned the Marauders a 1-1 draw with visiting University of Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun play. The result keeps the Marauders undefeated on the season.
UMary held Minnesota Duluth to just five total shots in the game with only three attempts on frame as the Marauders kept the Bulldogs attack in check. UMary generated 12 shots in the game – six in each half – and posted four on target as quality scoring chances were limited for both sides.
The Bulldogs found the net first. Attacking from the end line left of the goal, a pass attempt by Anna Tobias was inadvertently knocked into the net by a Marauders defender for an own goal just 13 minutes into the match. It was the first time all season the Marauders trailed in a game.
Gardner found the equalizer 14 minutes later with help from fellow freshman
Rio Spruenken. Playing the ball from the Marauders defensive end, Sprunken played a ball deep down the center of the field. Gardner outraced everyone to corral the ball 30 yards from the net. A couple touches later she slipped a shot from 15 yards out into the lower left side of the net to pull UMary even 1-1.
Neither team would find the net for the remainder of the day.
Madisyn Waltman finished with two saves in the match for UMary. Abigail Gotham stopped three shots for UMD.
UMary improves to 4-0-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in the NSIC. This is the longest unbeaten run to start a Marauders season during the program's NCAA era, which started in 2006. UMD is 2-2-1/1-0-1.
In the middle of a 5-game home stand, the Marauders next host the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Sept. 16, at 4 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
