Isenbart, Torborg lead UMary attack on day two of the Yellowjacket Invite

BILLINGS, MT – The University of Mary volleyball team closed out the opening weekend of the 2022 season with a pair of losses to South Dakota Tech and Saint Martin's University on day two of the Yellowjacket Invitational.
 
GAME 1 | South Dakota Tech 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 16-25, 25-14) over UMary
A tough loss in the first set left the Marauders playing from behind and unable to catch up to the Hardrockers.
 
 
Back on the court less than 12 hours after a late night match on Friday, the Marauders overcame a 6-point deficit in the opening set to claim a 21-20 lead on the second of two Kayla Lewinski aces in a 3-0 run. After two straight points by Mines, a kill by Maddie Cooped knotted the set at 22-22. The Hardrockers then rolled off three straight points to claim the opener 25-22.
 
Another tight set was claimed 25-19 by Mines as the Hardrockers outscored the Marauders 8-3 down the stretch.  
 
The Marauders rebounded to claim set three 25-16. UMary reeled off an impressive nine straight points to snap a 16-16 tie. Emily Torborg posted a trio of kills in the run and a Ellis served consecutive aces to close out the win.
 
The Hardrockers rebounded in the fourth set and maintained a comfortable lead throughout to win the set and the match.
 
Reyna Isenbart posted a team-best seven kills to lead the Marauders for a second straight match. She also chipped in 11 digs. Torborg added six kills. Ellis and Emily Baumstarck both had three aces. Ellis also had 11 digs.
 
Kaia Sueker continued her strong play with another 20 digs.
 
GAME 2 | Saint Martin's University 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-17) over UMary
Nine kills apiece by Nehkyah Ellis and Emily Torborg wasn't enough for the Marauders in a loss to Saint Martin's, who ended up undefeated over four matches at the Yellowjacket Invitational.
 
The Marauders were unable to contain a strong attack from the Saints, who hit .295 for the match with 45 kills to the Marauders .130 attack percentage and 30 kills.
 
Down seven in the first set, the Marauders closed withing 22-20 on a 6-1 run punctuated by a kill from Alexandria Harper before the Saints closed out the set. The Saints claimed the second set on the power of an 11-2 run. Saint Martin's finished the third set on a 10-1 run to claim the set and match.
 
Sueker finished with 10 digs and finished with 69 over the four-match weekend.
 
NEXT UP
The Marauders visit Pittsburg, KS, for the Gorilla Classic and will play four matches over Sept. 2-3.
