Offensive leads Marauders to win over Cotton Blossoms for opening win of season

PITTSBURG, KS – A powerful performance by the University of Mary attack in the opening match of the Gorilla Classic Volleyball Tournament earned the Marauders their first win of the season. UMary rolled to a straight set victory to the University of Arkansas at Monticello as three Marauders had at least seven kills in the first of two matches on the day.

The Marauders swept past the Cotton Blossoms for UMary's first win of the season. Emily Torborg and Maddie Cooper both had eight kills and Nehkyah Ellis added seven to pace the Marauders attack.
 
UMary posted a .264 attack percentage for the three sets while limiting UAM to a hitting percentage of .045.
 
Cooper and Alexandria Harper had a big day in the middle. The pair combined for 14 kills and just three attack errors while hitting .500. Cooper added two solo blocks while Harper had three assisted blocks.
 
Torborg crushed eight kills and had just one error.
 
In addition to her seven kills, Ellis had two aces and 10 digs.
 
GAME 2 | Pittsburg State 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 28-26, 25-20) over UMary
UMary suffered a heartbreaking loss to tournament host Pittsburg State. The Marauders opened with a 25-23 win in the first set and was in position to claim the second. With UMary up 24-23, Pitt State ran off the last three points of the set to win 26-24 and even the match at 1-1.
 
In the third set, both teams had opportunities to win but it was the Gorillas that came out on top. Down 25-24, UMary surged ahead 26-25. Just as in the second set, Pitt State then scored the last three points to win set three 28-26.
 
Maintaining their momentum, the Gorillas then captured set four 25-20 to take the match.
 
Ellis had a big day for UMary with a double double, combining 14 kills and 20 digs to lead the Marauders in both categories.
 
Reyna Isenbart also collected a double double with 10 kills and 13 digs.
 
Harper had another big game. The sophomore registered eight kills and hit .571 while adding five block assists. Cooper added seven kills and four block assists. Kameron Selvig posted 28 assists and 12 digs for UMary's third double double.
 
NEXT UP
The Marauders (1-5) close out the Gorilla Classic on Saturday, Sept. 3, with matches against New Mexico Highlands and Cameron University.
