GREENSBORO, NC – The University of Mary baseball team was honored for their academic success by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) for the 2021-22 season. This is the second straight season the ABCA has honored the Marauders with the Team Academic Excellence Award and the 5^th time in the award's seven-season history.
 
Led by head coach Tanner Spencer, the UMary baseball team had a 3.22 GPA for the season and earned many individual academic honors. Andrew Brooks and Shaun Hickey both received the Northern Sun Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award during their careers with the Marauders. A dozen Marauders earned NSIC All-Academic honors. All-NSIC first baseman Derek Shoen was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-Region Team.   
 
On the field the Marauders set an NCAA-era program record for wins with 25. It was the most wins since posting 30 in 2002. UMary also broke team single season records for strikeouts and home runs.
 
Presented by Sports Attack, the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award highlights programs coached by ABCA members that posted a team grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. More than 420 collegiate programs and over 400 high school programs were recognized for the 2021-22 season.
 
The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/ATEC Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
