Keller delivers 11th inning walk off win for Marauders in home finale over Huskies

BISMARCK, ND – Kendall Kellar set off a wild celebration when he singled home Derek Shoen in the 11th inning for a 2-1 walk off win for the University of Mary, earning the Marauders a spilt of their Northern Sun doubleheader with St. Cloud State University. The UMary victory snapped an 18-game win streak for SCSU in the Marauders home finale. The Huskies captured the opener 8-1.

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Marauders are 22-24 overall and 14-17 in the NSIC. UMary sits 8th in the Northern Sun standings. The top eight teams make the conference tournament. UMary closed the season at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday and Saturday, May 6-7. SCSU is 33-11 and 3rd in the NSIC at 25-5.

GAME 1 | SCSU 8 UMary 1
The Huskies started fast, scoring four times in the opening inning to build an insurmountable lead. In addition to four immediate runs, SCSU added single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings before closing the game with two more in the seventh.

The Marauders lone run came in the 7th inning on a solo blast to center field from Noah Hull.

Making his first start of the season, Derek Shoen pitched three innings, striking out three and allowing five runs. Daniel Turner pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Marauders.

Trevor Koenig pitched a 7.0 inning complete game for SCSU, limiting UMary to three hits. He walked one and struck out six.

PIVOT POINT
After loading the bases on a pair of walks after a leadoff single, Drew Bulson scored the first two runs of the game with a base hit to right field in the first inning. A two-out two-run double by Cameron Vollmer scored two more runs to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead.

STAT OF THE GAME
SCSU extended its win streak to 18 games as UMary pitchers hit five batters and allowed eight hits and four walks.

GAME 2 | UMary 2 SCSU 1 (11 innings)
In the Marauders final home game of the season, UMary scratched out a 2-1 11-inning victory behind a game-winning walkoff single by Kendall Kellar. A tremendous outing by starter Ty Jones and three relievers kept the Marauders in a position to end the Huskies 18-game win streak.

In his best outing of the season in a game the Marauders needed in pursuit of a conference tournament berth, Jones struck out a career-high 10 batters. He allowed a single run in the third inning on a wild pitch while limiting the Huskies to four hits and one walk in 6.2 innings.

The Marauders touched SCSU starter Jack Habeck for a single run in 5.2 innings. After striking out eight batters and holding UMary to three hits, Habeck hit leadoff batter Michael Polson with a pitch to start the sixth inning. After Habeck retired the next batter on a fly ball to center, Ethan Lanthier came on to earn the next out on an infield popup. Polson then stole second base and came around to score on an infield single by James Martin that deflected into center field, pulling UMary into a 1-1 tie.

Jayden Smith, who recorded the final out of the 7th inning in relief of Jones, started 4.1 innings of scoreless relief by the Marauders bullpen.

Gabe Ridenour was stellar in 3.0 innings of scoreless relief for UMary. Behind a double play in the 8th inning and a perfect 9th to force extra innings, the freshman escaped a jam in the 10th inning. After a two-out walk, an infield single and a pair of steals placed two runners in scoring position, Ridenout blew a pitch past Tate Wallat for a swining strikeout to keep the game deadlocked.

Mark Schommer pitched a scoreless 11th inning for UMary. He retired the first two hitters on ground balls before SCSU pitcher Nick Brauns singled to left center in his first pate appearance of the season. Unfazed, Schommer struck out Paul Stephenson swinging to set up an exciting end.

PIVOT POINT
Derek Shoen led off the 11th inning with a four-pitch walk off Brauns. Following a flyout to right field, Shoen took second on a wild pitch. Noah Hull was then intentionally walked. Keller, a defensive replacement earlier in the game, scalded a pitch through the right side of the infield to score Shoen with the winning run.
