SIOUX FALLS, SD – A University of Mary baseball season filled with broken records came to a close on the second day of the 2022 Northern Sun baseball tournament. In an elimination game meeting between the two teams located along HWY 83 in North Dakota, a late rally in hopes of keeping their season afloat fell just short in a 6-3 Marauders loss to Minot State University.
The Marauders set single season records for NCAA victories (24), strikeouts (414) and home runs (51). Individually single season records were broken by
Derek Shoen for home runs (14) and runs batted in (51) and Calvin James for doubles (18) while
Austin Wagner recalibrated the strikeout mark with 92. Several single game marks also fell.
Starting pitchers
Jonathan Draheim of UMary and RJ Martinez of Minot State controlled the game early as each team were limited to one run through five innings.
The Beavers scored on a Dalin Ludlow RBI single in the second. A daring baserunning move by Shoen evened the game in the 5th inning. The Minot State catcher failed to cleanly catch the ball on a strikeout of
Krece Papierski. When the Beavers were forced to throw the ball to first to retire Papierski, Shoen dashed home from third and touched the base just in front of the return throw and tag attempt.
TURNING POINT
After hitting two home runs in the opening game of the Northern Sun tournament,
Ty Jones looked to give the Marauders a 2-1 lead on a long fly ball to left field. Instead, Minot State left fielder Mark Ossuna climbed the wall to steal a home run. It was one of at least three balls that had an opportunity to leave the ballpark for the Marauders but were held up by 20 mph winds blowing in from left field on a mostly sunny 90 degree day.
Minot State's first effort to retake the lead failed in the sixth when UMary pitcher
Jonathan Draheim fielded a bunt attempt and threw to Papierski at the plate to tag out Declan Buckle for the first out of the inning. Two batters later Drew Behling changed the game's complexion with a grand slam for a 5-1 Minot State lead.
The Marauders returned to the scoreboard in the eighth inning on a 2-run single by Papierski with the bases loaded to close within 5-3 before the Beavers tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning.
In the ninth the Marauders loaded the bases on lead-off singles by Jones and
Kyle Jameson and a 1-out single by James. UMary was unable to capitalize as the next two batters were retired.
