VERMILLION, SD – Strong performances in multiple events by both
Akil Howell and
Dillan Kovash paced the University of Mary outdoor track & field efforts at the University of South Dakota Early Bird. The meet featured competition from 22 different programs, including five NCAA Division I schools.
In one of the deepest fields of the day, Howell ran the 400 meter dash in 49.07 seconds. The freshman placed 5
th overall in an event featuring over 50 scholar-athletes. He was the top NCAA Division II finisher.
Howell also grabbed 10
th place in the 200 meter dash (22.45 seconds).
Kovash doubled up in the javelin and the pole vault. The senior placed 6
th in the javelin with a top effort of 51.51 meters. He finished 10
th in the pol vault after clearing the bar at 4.32 meters.
Jesse Kaas led a big performance for UMary in the 5,000 meter. Kaas placed 5
th in the longest race of the day, finishing in a time of 14:56.07. Two other Marauders also finished in the top 10.
Caleb Yokom placed 7
th after being clocked in 15:21.71.
Guillermo Fregoso fought his way to a 9
th place finish with a time of 15:34.34.

The Marauders next compete at home when UMary hosts the Al Bortke Open on Saturday, April 9, at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
