Marauders conclude 2022 Spring Games with defeats to the Yellow Jackets and Trojans

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, FL – The University of Mary softball team (2-18) wrapped up their 2022 spring games with a close extra inning 9-6 defeat to Cedarville University (10-3). The Marauders then fell to Trevecca Nazarene University (11-6) 9-1.

Madison Wszolek got UMary on the board in the bottom of the second inning after she hit a sacrifice to center field, scoring Brooke McClure. Cedarville tied the game up at 1-1 in the fourth inning. The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the fifth inning after scoring three runs. Cedarville added on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.

The Marauders did not give in and rallied back to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. McClure cut the lead to 5-2 as she singled to left field, scoring Haley Berube. With one out and two runners on, Rachael Laetsch hit a three-run bomb to left-center field tying the game up at 5-5.

UMary had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Berube would hit a ball hard up the middle that saw Cedarville's pitcher knock the ball down and throw Berube out from her knees, sending the game into extra innings.

The Yellow Jackets took a 9-5 lead after scoring four runs in the top of the eighth inning. The Marauders got a run back as Berube scored on a ground ball hit by McClure to the second baseman. UMary failed to tack on more runs and lost 9-6 to Cedarville.

Rachael Laetsch came on as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-2 with one home run and three batters driven in.

GAME 2 Trevecca Nazarene University 9 University of Mary 1 (F/6)

UMary jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning as Kaylee Kannegiesser hit a sac fly to right field, which scored Rachael Laetsch. TNU took control of the game in the fourth inning, scoring four runs. The Trojans then added on three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth, securing a 9-1 TNU victory.

The Marauders had five hits while the Trojans had ten. TNU earned five walks compared to UMary, who had zero.
