Marauders suffer pair of single run setbacks to Mavericks

SIOUX CITY, IA – For the second time in four days, the University of Mary baseball team lost both ends of a Northern Sun doubleheader by a solitary run. In a series relocated from Mankato, MN, to Sioux City, IA, UMary dropped a 2-1 decision to Minnesota State University in the opener before falling 7-6 in extra innings in game two.

The Marauders opened the three-game series against the defending conference champion Mavericks with a 6-3 win on Saturday.

UMary suffered a pair of one-run walk-off losses at Wayne State College on Thursday.

SCHEDULE UPDATE
The Marauders close out a seven-game road trip to open the Northern Sun season with another schedule change. The UMary doubleheader at Augustana has been pushed up a day to Tuesday, March 29, due to projected inclement weather. First pitch is slated for 1:30 pm at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, SD.

The Marauders-Vikings series was originally slated for Wednesday, March 30.

GAME ONE | Minnesota State 2 University of Mary 1
In a meeting between two of the top pitchers in the Northern Sun, UMary's Austin Wagner and Minnesota State's Nick Altermatt combined to allow only seven hits and three runs as both pitched complete games. Both teams struggled for baserunners and neither squad could score more than a run in any inning.

Scoreless through three innings, the Marauders scored a single run in the fourth when a Ty Jones sacrifice fly scored Kyle Jameson. The Mavericks pulled even in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch.

TURNING POINT
A leadoff walk, a bunt single and a sacrifice bunt to start the fifth inning placed a pair of Mavaricks in scoring position. Wagner posted a strikeout for the second out before Altermatt singled through the left side to drive home the go-ahead run.

UMary managed two-out baserunners in both the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to take advantage of the opportunities.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
GAME 2 | MSU 7 UMary 6 (10 innings)
Down four runs after five innings, the University of Mary offense came to life in the sixth inning when Cal James blasted a grand slam to right field with two outs to tie the game 4-4. The Marauders claimed their first lead of the game in the seventh when Noah Hull tripled to center field to score James Martin.

The lead was short-lived as the Mavericks pulled even in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch.

The resilient Marauders regained their lead in the seventh. After leading off the inning with a double, Michael Polson scored on a fielders choice off the bat of Ty Jones for a 6-5 UMary lead.

Following a scoreless inning from Jayden Smith in the eighth inning, the Marauders allowed single runs in the ninth and tenth innings to suffer their second one-run loss of the day and their fourth in four games.

TURNING POINT
With Paxton Miller on the hill to close out the ninth for the Marauders, Altermatt continued to haunt UMary. The winning pitcher in the opener doubled with one out before scoring from third on a wild pitch with two down to send the game into extra innings.
