UMary tennis opens spring games with a 4-3 win over Davenport

ORLANDO, FL –The University of Mary tennis team (6-1, 5-1 Northern Sun) opened their spring matches in style, taking down Davenport University 4-3.

"My athletes fought hard for each point and kept their composure through long rallies. I'm proud of the effort that they showed tonight," UMary head coach Vida Saliendra said.

The Marauders swept their doubles matches. Chloe Chong and Ilona Freitag were victorious in number one doubles 6-2. Doaa Farouk Mohamed and Emily Needham earned themselves a 6-2 win in number two doubles. Heidi Jacobson and Callie McDonald won 6-1 in number three doubles.

Chong fell to Willemien Coetzee in number won singles, losing a close contest 4-6, 6-3, 0-1.

Freitag lost in number two singles 3-6, 0-6 to Isabella Carofano.

Mohamed remains unbeaten in singles competition as she took down Louise Hosking 6-2, 6-1 in number three singles.

Needham won an exciting matchup in number four singles over Kumiko Yamaguchi 6-2, 7-5.

Jacobson was defeated in number five singles by Vladislava Shumilova 1-6, 0-6.

McDonald secured a UMary victory in a thrilling contest as she took down Charlotte Zhuwakini in number six singles 7-5, 6-2.
