Late cold spell dooms Marauders in 71-67 road loss to Golden Eagles

CROOKSTON, MN – Gertautas Urbonavicius and Kai Huntsberry combined for nearly half the scoring for the University of Mary in a narrow 71-67 road loss to the University of Minnesota Crookston. On a night where points were sometimes hard to find and neither team could gain much of an advantage, the Golden Eagles created their largest lead of the game in the final minute of play.

Urbonavicius and Huntsberry posted 30 points for the Marauders. The inside-out game of Urbonavicius accounted for 16 points. The forward hit a pair of treys and was 6-for-11 from the field. He had five rebounds and three assists with no turnovers before fouling out.

Huntsberry added 14 points and also nailed a pair of 3s. The junior guard dished five assists and committed just one of the Marauders season-low three turnovers.

Down 36-33 at intermission, the Marauders could never grab a lead but twice tied the game in the second half. After Lucas Mayer converted a 3-point play with under ten minutes remaining to knot the game at 54-54, a trey by Uzo Dibiamaka on their next possession pushed the Golden Eagles back in front.

Over the next nine minutes the Marauders were 1-for-11 from the field and UMC maintained its lead for the remainder of the game, eventually moving ahead by eight points at 68-60 with 55 seconds left in the game.

The game featured four ties and seven lead changes.

Mayer added nine points for the Marauders. Jacob Jackson scored nine points with eight rebounds off the bench. He also hit all five free throws.

Dibiamaka led UMC with 19 points, making 4-of-6 trey attempts in the game. Ethan Channel added 17 points.

The Marauders (7-14 overall/6-10 NSIC) shot 41% from the floor overall with a 7-for-25 mark behind the arc and converted 10-of-11 free throws. The Golden Eagles (8-14/5-11) shot 52% for the game and made 8-of-20 treys but finished 7-of-15 at the line.

UMary closes out the weekend at Bemidji State University on Saturday, Feb. 5. Game time is 5:30 pm.
