First inning fireworks propels Marauders to 15-5 win over Mountain Lions

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – First-inning 2-run home runs by both Calvin James and Ty Jones provided the University of Mary an early jolt of energy as the visiting Marauders rolled past the University of Colorado Colorado Springs 15-5.

Behind a trio of home runs by the Marauders, UMary scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings, including four in the first and seven in the fourth. The Marauders scored the first nine runs of the game.

The offensive onslaught overshadowed another exceptional start by Austin Wagner. The lefty struck out 11 Mountain Lions in just five innings, tying his UMary career-high for punchouts. Wagner allowed just two hits and no walks. The lone run allowed was unearned.

In his first two starts of the season – both wins – Wagner has allowed two earned runs, five hits and one walk while striking out 17.

Following a leadoff walk to Michael Polson, James cracked a home run to right center to give UMary a quick 2-0 lead. Derek Shoen then singled and scored one out later on a Jones blast to left field.

Polson and James led off the second with walks and both scored on a double by Noah Hull to increase the Marauders lead to 6-0. In the third, Polson hit a run-scoring single to center before Shoen produced a sacrifice fly to grow the Marauders lead to 8-0.

Shoen closed out the Marauders scoring with a grand slam in the fourth, capping a 7-run inning.
