Atlebauers scores career-high 20 on Senior Day in 78-70 Marauders loss to Wolves, UMary to open NSIC Tourney at WSU

BISMARCK, ND – Davids Atelbauers scored a career-best 20 points on Senior Day and the University of Mary men's basketball team fired up 45 second-half points in a 78-70 loss to hot-shooting Northern State University in the final home game of the season for the Marauders.
 
Atelbauers reached double figures for the seventh time in eight games. The senior from Ogre, Latvia, hit three trey and made 7-of-12 shots in his last game at the McDowell Activity Center. He hit all three of his free throws and added three assists in the game.
 
The Marauders now shift their attention to the post-season. UMary opens the 2022 NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, February 23, at Winona State University. Tip off is set for 6 pm. The Marauders are the 5th seed in the NSIC North and the Warriors are the 4th seed in the NSIC South. The Marauders-Warriors victor advances to the quarterfinals on Saturday, February 26, against the University of Minnesota Duluth at 11 am at The Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD.
 
UMary finished the regular season 10-16 overall and 9-12 in the Northern Sun to finish 5th in the North Division and 11th overall. Northern State is 19-11/13-9.
 
A slow start in the first half sent the Marauders into intermission trailing 35-25 as UMary shot just 30% from the floor.
 
The Marauders exploded out of the locker room into the second half, using a 17-3 run featuring a pair of 3s by Atelbauers to claim a 42-38 lead.
 
With both teams knocking down shots and another surge by the Wolves, the Marauders used a trey by Gertautas Urbonavicius and a putback of an offensive rebound by Lucas Mayer to regain the advantage at 60-55 with just under eight minutes remaining.
 
Northern State soon found another gear. After a Kai Huntsberry layup pushed the Marauders lead to 62-57, the Wolves ran off 13 straight points for a 70-62 lead and maintained at least a 6-point advantage the rest of the night.
 
The Marauders shot 51% for the second half and outscored the Wolves 45-43 in the final 20 minutes. For the game UMary shot 41% and was 7-for-24 behind the arc. Northern State connected on 49% of its shots and was 15-of-29 on 3s.
 
Urbonavicius finished the game with 18 points before he fouled out. He was 2-of-3 behind the arc and 7-of-12 overall. Huntsberry scored 12 points, has five rebounds and six assists. Kam Warrens scored nine points and added eight rebounds.
 
Augustin Reede was 8-of-12 behind the arc and scored 24 points for the Wolves. Moni Jacksen added 16.
