UMary falls 76-73 in a hard-fought overtime loss to MSUM

MOORHEAD, MN – A rough fourth quarter proved to be costly as the University of Mary women's basketball team (12-15, 6-12 Northern Sun) fell in heartbreaking fashion, losing 76-73 in overtime to Minnesota State University Moorhead (8-13, 7-10 NSIC).

For UMary to reach the NSIC playoffs, they must win their next game against Northern State University on Saturday, February 19, and MSUM has to defeat Minot State University.

The Marauders got off to a hot start as they took an early 18-10 lead in the first quarter over the Dragons. UMary shot 50% from the field in the first quarter, while MSUM shot 28.57% from the floor.

MSUM cut UMary's lead to five points at the end of the second quarter. The third quarter saw the Marauders take a 54-41 lead after outscoring the Dragons 23-15.

MSUM rallied in the fourth quarter outscoring UMary 26-13. The Marauders led by three points with 14 seconds remaining when Mariah McKeever stole the ball and hit a three to send the game into overtime.

The Dragons took a 76-73 lead with three seconds remaining. Macy Williams would get a look from behind the arc to tie the game, but the shot fell short, securing an MSUM win.

Lexie Schneider posted her third straight double-double and sixth of the season. Schneider scored 18 points and brought down 13 boards. Macy Williams had 17 points to go along with eight assists.

Carly Kottsick put up a career-high in points. Kottsick dropped 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field while going 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Ryleigh Wacha scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.

The rebounding battle was close, with the Dragons just edging out the Marauders 42-41. UMary committed 22 turnovers times while MSUM had 12.

The Marauders shot 50% from the field, shooting 31.8% from three while going 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. The Dragons shot 36.8% from the field, shooting 31% from behind the arc while going 11-of-16 from the charity stripe.
