BOTTINEAU, ND –
Isaiah Thomas had a hand in all four goals for #1 ranked University of Mary and
Caleb Petrie had two goals and an assist as the Marauders held off a persistent Dakota College at Bottineau squad 4-2 in the opening game of a weekend series.
Thomas continued his sizzling offensive play that has led to three straight multi-point games. The Bismarck, ND, native had a goal and two assists in Saturday's 3-2 win over Minot State. Against Williston State College on Wednesday he contributed a pair of goals.
In the Marauders win over the Lumberjacks on Friday, Thomas assisted on the first two goals of the game before scoring two of his own. Over the last three games he has accumulated five goals and four assists.
Petrie gave the Marauders the early advantage with a goal at 3:54 of the opening period. He doubled the Marauders advantage to 2-0 just 38 seconds into the second period. Less than two minutes later Dakota College tallied to close the gap to 2-1.
A shorthanded goal by Thomas at 7:05 of the third period off a feed from Petrie allowed UMary to rebuild its lead to 3-1. Refusing to fade away, the Lumberjacks closed within a goal when Tyson Pringle found the net midway though the final stanza.
Thomas then sealed the Marauders victory with 6:23 left in the game on his second goal of the night.
In addition to Thomas and Petrie,
Alex Flicek also had a multi-point game as he picked up a pair of assists.
Conan Hayton had another strong night in goal for the Marauders, turning away 20 of the 22 shots he faced in the game. Bill Patmore made 44 saves for the Lumberjacks as UMary held a 48-22 edge in shots.
The 2-time defending American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2 national champion Marauders improve to 20-3-1 overall following their first meeting of the season with the Lumberjacks.
