Sam Bruss had a strong performance Saturday to lead a small Marauders contingent at the Dragon Open. Bruss had two pins plus a win by bonus points to take third place in the Red Division at 184. After opening with a win by fall over Joseph Lopez of Minot State at 5:34, Bruss suffered his only loss of the meet. He immediately rebounded to pin MSUM's Brett Graham 2:08 into the match before dispatching Shane Hansen of Minot State 15-0 for a technical fall victory.
KNOWLEDGE BASE
The Marauders feature five wresters who have competed at the NCAA Division II championships:
- All-American Reece Barnhardt is the NSIC Wrestler to Watch in 2022-23 for UMary. The sophomore from Bismarck, ND, and St. Mary's graduate was both the NWCA National and the Northern Sun Rookie of the Year for his efforts last year. His 4th place finish last winter is the best-ever for a Marauder at the NCAA wrestling championship. He had a record of 24-10 overall and 6-1 in the NSIC.
- Max Bruss was a national qualifier as a freshman in 2021. The junior just missed returning to the NCAA championships last spring after taking 5th at 174 in the Super Regional.
- A 2-time All-American and a three-time NCAA championship qualifier at 165, Braydon Huber is a 2-time All-Northern Sun wrestler who was a perfect 10-0 in duals last season.
- Matthew Kaylor, a junior from Bismarck, ND, and a Legacy High School product, placed at the 2021 NCAA Super Regional before taking third last year at 197 and moving on to the 2022 NCAA championships for the first time.
- A junior from Peoria, IL, who spent his freshman year at the University of Buffalo, Leo Mushinsky qualified for the NCAAs in his first season at UMary in 2022 after taking 3rd at the Super Regional.
