MINOT, ND – The University of Mary trio of
Zyon Smith,
Kam Warrens and
Treyton Mattern combined to score 59 points for the visiting Marauders in an 82-76 loss at Minot State University. The defeat snapped the Marauders 3-game win streak against the Beavers.
Smith finished with a season-best 22 points. Warrens added 20 points and Mattern had 17 as trio combined for all but 17 of the Marauders points.
In a game moved from from December 31 to today as winter storms forced the rescheduling of several contests throughout the Northern Sun, the contest featured 11 lead changes and six ties.
UMary jumped out to a 5-0 lead and remained in front much of the first half, leading by as many as eight points before entering intermission with a narrow 35-34 advantage. The Marauders (6-4 overall, 2-4 NSIC) were unable to shake the Beavers (6-4, 3-3) and took their last lead of the game at 52-50 on a pair of Mattern free throws with just under 10 minutes to play.
The next six minutes decided the game as Minot State went on a 17-4 run to give the Beavers their biggest lead of the day at 67-56. UMary sliced the deficit to four points three different times in the last minute of play but each time Minot State responded, first with a dunk and then four straight free throws.
Smith hit three treys on the day and Warrens added two as the pair combined for all five UMary 3-pointers in the game. Warrens added eight rebounds and four steals, both team highs. Mattern made all five of his free throws as UMary was 15-for-17 at the line.
Freshmen
Jeremiah Jones and
Ty Rogers came off the bench to score six points each. Jones also had seven boards and two steals.
Khari Broadway led the Beavers with 21 points. Camron Dunfee added 15 points. They combined to make 9-of-10 free throws as the Beavers made 19-of-21 overall.
Following a break for Christmas, the Marauders return to action with a pair of games on New Year's weekend. The storm0related schedule change sends UMary to Bemidji State University on Friday, December 30, before playing at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, December 30.
