Warrens posts career night in Marauders road loss to Beavers

BEMIDJI, MN – Despite a double double from Kam Warrens and five players in double figures, the University of Mary couldn't match the second half scoring pace set by host Bemidji State University in a 77-67 loss to the Beaver.

After scoring just two points and grabbing three rebounds in the opening half, Warrens finished with a career-high 21 points while tying his career mark in rebounds with 12. It was his first double double of the season and the fifth of his UMary career. Warrens was 6-for-6 at the line and distributed three assists.

A sparkling 3-for-5 behind the arc, Treyton Mattern added 11 points. Lucas Mayer registered 11 points and five rebounds. Gertautas Urbonavicius had 10 points and five rebounds and Zyon Smith posted ten points with three treys.

The Marauders (6-5 overall, 2-5 Northern Sun) started strong, building a 14 point lead. Forcing turnovers on back to back BSU (7-5, 3-4 NSIC) possessions, a layup by Mattern and a triple from Smith provided UMary a 33-19 lead with five minutes to play in the first half. At intermission the Marauders held a 34-30 lead.

After Bemidji State tied the game 43-43, the two teams traded the lead six times over the next few minutes. An Urbonavicius jumper outside the lane gave the Marauders their last lead of the night at 49-48. A triple from RJ Smith turned the scoreboard in the Beavers favor at 51-49 and Bemidji State played from out front the rest of the night.

BSU shot 53.1% in the second half and 52.6% for the game. After converting 44.4% of their first half shots, including a 5-for-11 effort behind the arc, UMary shot just 33.3% in the second half and 38.3% for the game.

John Sutherland did much of the damage for BSU, finishing with 26 points while making 13-of-16 shots. Smith was 3-for-4 on treys and added 13 points.

The Beavers did most of their damage in the paint, outscoring the Marauders 44-24 on the interior.

UMary was solid at the line, going 14-of-17 to 9-for-11 for BSU.

UMary closes out 2022 at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, December 31. Game time on New Year's Eve is 3 pm.
