BISMARCK, ND – Facing their toughest foe of the season, the University of Mary men's basketball team was unable to hold its early lead against defending Northern Sun champion University of Minnesota Duluth.
Looking for an upset at home for a second straight year after defeating then-6
th ranked UMD at the McDowell Activity Center in February, the Marauders used an 8-0 run sparked by a
Treyton Mattern 3-pointer to claim a 24-20 lead.
What followed was a 17-0 run by the Bulldogs, capped by a dunk from Austin Andrews. Minnesota Duluth finished the first half with a 40-29 lead and maintained a double digit advantage throughout the second half.
Mattern led the Marauders in scoring with 15 points. He also had three rebounds and three assists.
Kam Warrens drilled three treys and posted 12 points.
Jeremiah Jones added seven points and four rebounds off the bench.
Andrews led the Bulldogs with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Drew Blair added 15.
Following a weekend split with a victory Friday over St. Cloud State University, the Marauders 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the NSIC. UMD is 9-2 and 5-0.
The Marauders have two more games before taking a break for Christmas. UMary plays at Bemidji State University on Friday, December 16, and at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, December 17. After a game at Minot State University on New Year's Eve, yhe Marauders next play at the McDowell Activity Center on January 7 against Southwest Minnesota State University.
