Voit keys Marauders attack in season-opening setback to Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, SD – The University of Mary women's basketball team began their season on the road against a tough Black Hills State team. The Marauders were resilient in recovering from the first quarter plagued by turnovers, but despite their best efforts fell short 67-77 in a close contest.

Addison Rozell put the Marauders (0-1) on the board first from the free throw line, but the first quarter was ultimately controlled by the Yellow Jackets (2-1) who led 22-11 and shot 66.7 from the field.

Megan Voit jumpstarted the Marauders offense from beyond the arc in the second quarter as she drained all four of her three-point attempts for 12 points. The Marauders entered halftime in a closer affair trailing 30-40.

Rozell looked strong in the post early in the second half, helping the Marauders edge the Yellow Jackets in rebounds. The Marauders continued to play tight defense and manage the clock well throughout the fourth quarter, but the Yellow Jackets would still prevail behind their strong scoring led by Danica Kocer, who yielded a game-high 18 points. BHSU finished the game outshooting UMary 50.0 to 41.1 percent from the field, but were narrowly outrebounded 34-33.
