Zander leads Marauders Efforts in 88-65 loss to #14 Tampa

HILO, HI - The University of Mary women's basketball finally returned to action for the first time in eight days on Thanksgiving Day. The Marauders first game at the Malika Sports Thanksgiving Tournament provided a tough task against the #14 ranked University of Tampa, a regular NCAA tournament qualifying team. The Marauders got off to a competitive start early, but the Spartans might would eventually settle into the matchup as they pulled away with the victory 88-65.

UMary (0-2) would hang with Tampa (5-0) early in the contest managing to score the first seven points of the contest and knotting the score up 19-19 at the end of the first quarter. Zoe Velde and Megan Zander would lead the charge for the Marauders offensively with both gaining seven early points in the first quarter. 

Tampa would begin to pull ahead in the second quarter, outscoring the Marauders 20-9 in the quarter and entering halftime with a 39-28 lead. The Spartans would retain a comfortable lead behind strong performances in the post by Melijah Sullivan and Sydney Kin. Sullivan had a double-double by scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Kin added 15 points and six boards. 

Four other Spartans scored double-digit points in the contest which ended in a 88-65 win for #14 Tampa. The Marauders made 26 of 60 (43.3%) shots from the field, but only made five of 23 (21.7%) shots from beyond the arc. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Megan Zander would lead the Marauders efforts with 11 points and four rebounds, both team-highs. She also dished out a pair of assists and played a clean game with no turnovers. 

Addison Rozell scored 10 points and grabbed a pair of rebounds.

Ryleigh Wacha played hard on both sides of the court, scoring nine points, and swiping a pair of steals. 

The Marauders scored 25 points off the bench against the Spartans. Reese Wishart looked solid with nine points, and Zoe Velde and Moriku Hakim both added seven.
