Top-ranked Marauders fall to Tommies on Military Appreciation Day

MANDAN, ND – Just two games after 2-time defending national champion University of Mary earned the nation's top ranking in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2, the Marauders suffered their first setback at home in over 11 months. Visiting University of St. Thomas scored a trio of second period goals and held the Marauders scoreless in a 5-0 win to earn the Tommies a Military Appreciation weekend split.

Wearing military themed jerseys in the first period, the Marauders skaters presented their game jerseys to 25 United State veterans at the first intermission.

This was the Marauders first loss at home since dropping a 4-1 decision to Minot State, an ACHA M1 squad, on Dec. 4, 2021. The last time UMary lost at home to an ACHA M2 squad was January 11, 2020 (2-1 to University of Providence). UMary is now 78-10-2-3 all-time at home and 75-2 against ACHA M2 teams.

This was also only the second time the Marauders have been shut out in program history (4-0 loss to Minot State, Dec. 7, 2019).

The Marauders slip to 17-2. The Tommies are 9-4.

For the second straight game the Tommies scored first when Jed England slid a backhander from the left circle past Marauders goalkeeper Conan Hayton for a power play goal at 8:48 of the first period.

The game was decided in a four minute stretch of the second period. Josh Hermes scored the Tommies second goal of the day at 12:57. Brady Knorr found the net at 15:30 and England posted his second goal at 16:55 to boost the UST lead to 4-0. St. Thomas tacked on an additional goal in the third.

UST limited a potent UMary attack to just 18 shots in the game with Tommies goalkeeper Samuel Haupfear posting a shutout. The Tommies fired 24 shots on net with Conan Hayton making 14 stops and Kyle Hayden adding seven.

The Marauders home stand continues on Wednesday, Nov. 16, when UMary hosts Dakota College at Bottineau. Face off is set for 7 pm at the Starion Sports Complex Schwan Cadillac Rink.
