Potent power play keys Marauders to weekend sweep of Gophers, extends win streak to 27

MANDAN, ND – After going into overtime in their first two meetings this season, the University of Mary hockey team found an easier path today to their 27th straight win. Scoring their first two goals of the day on the power play and finding the net in all three periods, the Marauders registered a 4-0 win over visiting University of Minnesota to complete a weekend sweep.

The Marauders (7-0) edged the Gophers last weekend 1-0 in a shootout victory on Minnesota's home ice. Last night UMary captured a 4-3 overtime win at home over Minnesota. Sunday's win came with significantly less stress.

UMary All-American Johnny Witzke opened the scoring at 13:25 of the first period as he posted a power play goal with Alex Flicek and Drew Lenertz providing the helpers.

The Marauders doubled down on their lead halfway through the second period. Once again taking advantage of a Minnesota penalty, Seth Cushing tallied on a power play off assists from Isaiah Thomas and Witzke.

A goal by Riley Scanlon at 16:16 of the middle period pushed the Marauders lead to 3-0.

Derek Dropik sealed the Marauders win with a goal just 40 seconds into the third period.

Eight different players picked up points for the Marauders. Witzke finished with a goal and an assist. Thomas delivered two assists.

Reigning ACHA M2 Player of the Year Kyle Hayden was again stellar in net. The All-American picked up his third shutout of the season in four starts, stopping all 22 shots he faced.

Spencer White had 29 saves for Minnesota.

UMary finished 2-for-4 on the power play. Minnesota was 0-for-4. Both teams committed six penalties for 12 minutes.

The two-time defending nation champion Marauders head east for a trio of games against two of the top programs in ACHA M2. UMary plays at North Carolina State University on Oct. 14 before visiting Liberty University on Oct. 15-16. The Marauders defeated the Flames 4-0 earlier this season in a neutral site game.
