MISSOULA, MT –
Ryan Wolf provided the University of Mary an early lead and
Kyle Hayden made sure it was enough as two-time defending national champion University of Mary extended its win streak to 34 with a 5-0 win at the University of Montana.
The Marauders specialty units had another big game. While UMary was 0-for-3 on the power play, the Marauders scored twice shorthanded and killed off eight Griz powerplay opportunities.
Playing in his first game since suffering an injury in a win at North Carolina State on October 13, Wolf scored his first career goal just 4:11 into the contest. Picking up a loose puck atop the slot, Wolf fired a shot into the top left corner for a 1-0 UMary lead.
Less than five minutes later,
Alex Flicek doubled the Marauders lead on a nifty play while skating shorthanded. Flicek stick-poked the puck away from a Montana skated at center ice and skated in alone on Griz goaltender Jackson Hill. After an initial save, Flicek knocked home a loose puck in the crease to send the Marauders into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Neither team would score in a second period that witnessed nine penalties, seven coming from an early scrum.
The third period was also littered with penalties but the Marauders fought through to post a trio of goals.
Jaren Hugelen scored unassisted at 11:49 before Jack Dapron tallied less than a minute later at 12:45.
Tanner Eskro closed the scoring at 17:09 with UMary's second shorthanded goal of the night.
Hayden picked up his 6
th shutout of the season in his nine starts. The reigning ACHA M2 Player of the Year made 34 saves in the game. Hill had 23.
Derek Dropik had two assists in the game and eight Marauders produced points.
UMary improves to 14-0 on the season. The Marauders haven't lost or tied a game since dropping a 4-1 decision to Minot State's ACHA M1 team on December 4, 2021.
