Marauders play Beavers to scoreless draw to earn 5th straight NSIC tournament berth

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary secured its fifth straight trip to the Northern Sun women's soccer postseason tournament by playing Highway 83 rival Minot State University to a scoreless draw in the Marauders season finale. UMary entered the day needing at least a tie to guarantee a trip to the playoffs.

The 7th seeded Marauders open the 2022 NSIC tournament at #2 seed Bemidji State University on Monday, October 27. Game time is 5 pm at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, MN. BSU defeated UMary 2-0 in Bismarck last Friday with a pair of goals in the second half. The last time the Marauders and Beavers met in the NSIC tournament, the two squads played to a scoreless draw in 2018 with UMary advancing to the semifinals on penalty kicks.

The NSIC semifinals on Friday, November 4, and championship game on Sunday, November 6, will be hosted by the highest seeded team remaining after the opening round. The NSIC tournament champion earns a spot in the NCAA regional tournament.

The Marauders run of five straight league tournaments is the 2nd longest in school history. UMary earned a spot in the tournament the first seven years the Marauders were a member of the Northern Sun (2006-12).

Neither Marauders goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman nor Maddie Kindred of the Beavers were tested much. In her final home game, Waltman posted five saves, including three in the second half. Kindred had three with two coming in the first period.

Waltman finished the night with the 34th clean sheet of her Marauders career – a UMary record – and the ninth of the season. Overall it was the Marauders 11th shutout of the season.

Kendra Park led the Marauders with five shots overall and two on frame for the game. Four of her attempts came in the second half including a shot over the crossbar from inside the 18 late in the contest.

Olivia Gardner also had multiple shots for UMary, finishing with three.

The Marauders allowed just 10 goals in 15 NSIC contests, 5th fewest in the league. The Beavers allowed the fewest goals with three.

The Marauders finish the regular season with a record of 10-4-4 overall and 7-4-4 in the NSIC for 25 points. UMary tied for 6th in the conference standings with Winona State and Concordia-St. Paul. Winona State edged past UMary for the 6th seed based on the 3rd tiebreaker – more goals in NSIC play. Minot State is 8-2-8 and 8-1-6 to finish 4th in the NSIC.
