Flicek delivers overtime winner to extend Marauders win streak to 33

MANDAN, ND – Needing an overtime goal to keep its winning streak alive, the University of Mary turned to all-time leading scorer Alex Flicek and the hometown hero delivered. The Bismarck, ND, native scored just 67 seconds into the extra session to extend the Marauders win streak to 33 games with a 2-1 victory over visiting Utah State University.

Two-time defending ACHA Men's Division 2 national champion UMary improves to 13-0 on the season.

The Marauders dominated the opening two periods but struggled to put the puck past Aggies goaltender Titan Anderson. Despite a 22-12 edge in shots through the first two periods UMary managed just one goal against Anderson.

Early in the second period Jack Dapron took a feed in the right corner from Riley Scanlon. Left alone, Dapron skated through the circle and delivered a backhander above Anderson's glove at the 1:49 mark to give UMary a 1-0 lead.

The Aggies struggled to get good looks against the Marauders defense and goaltender Kyle Hayden. Utah State finally found the equalizer on a Ben Carlson power play goal midway through the third period and the Marauders win streak was suddenly in jeopardy.

Entering overtime for the fourth time this season in 14 games, the Marauders came out flying.

Skating 3-on-3, Flicek started a rush out of the Marauders defensive zone after gaining a loose puck in the slot and tapping it to Seth Cushing to start a breakaway. Cushing sailed down the left boards and patiently waited for Flicek to catch up. From the circle, Cushing found Flicek flying down the slot and put the puck on his stick just outside the crease to the right of the net. Flicek then delivered a withering backhand into the left side of the net for the winner.

Hayden finished the day with 17 saves. Anderson finished with 33 stops.

The win wrapped up a perfect homecoming weekend for UMary. The Marauders toppled Lindenwood University twice before downing the Aggies.

Next up for the Marauders is a 3-game trip to Montana. The Marauders face the University of Montana om October 27 before facing Montana State University October 28-29.
