Garrett strikes twice as Marauders rally past Bobcats 6-2

BOZEMAN, MT – The University of Mary scored the final four goals of the game to pull away from Montana State University 6-2 to complete a weekend sweep in the Big Sky state. Zach Garrett scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the Marauders, who are ranked first nationally in American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2.
 
The Marauders, who knocked off the University of Providence 5-0 on Friday, improve to 22-4-1-2 on the season with their second straight road win this season over the Bobcats. Montana State, ranked fourth in the ACHA M2 West region, is 13-7-1-0.
 
The Bobcats jumped put to a quick 1-0 lead just 79 seconds into the game on a goal by Leif Danenhaven.
 
UMary took advantage of a Montana State penalty to tie the game 1-1 at 11:14 on a power play goal by Jaren Hugelen, scoring off assists from Alex Flicek and Drew Lenertz. The Marauders took their first lead just 54 seconds later on Garrett's first goal of the night. MSU eventually pulled even when Hayden Klem found the net with just 20 seconds left in the first period to knot the game at 2-2 entering the first intermission.
 
The game remained deadlock through much of the second period before the Marauders scored twice in the final three minutes. Marshall Tschida used an assist from Seth Cushing to give UMary its second lead of the night at 3-2 at 17:06. Just 67 seconds later Garrett Freeman scored his 13th goal of the season to push the Marauders lead to 4-2.
 
Shortly before the end of the second period Montana State was cited for their third penalty of the night and UMary took advantage of the situation early in the third period. Garrett pushed the Marauders lead to 5-2 just 43 seconds into the final stanza when he scored UMary's second power play of the night in the squad's third and final opportunity of the game.
 
Scoring for the second straight game, Teddy Lillico tallied at 13:21 to seal the UMary win.
 
Conan Hayton was stellar in net for the Marauders, stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced. Tyler Cortis finished with 56 saves for the Bobcats.
 
Freeman finished with one goal and two assists in the game. Tschida had both a goal and an assist.
 
The Marauders next play the University of Jamestown M1 team on the road Jan. 19 before playing a trio of games against the University of Denver, Metro State University of Denver and the University of Colorado Jan. 21-23.
