Late surge by Warriors sinks Marauders hopes

WINONA, MN – The University of Mary men's basketball team fell just shy of their goal to finally earn a road win at Winona State University. Playing even with five minutes remaining in the game, a late run carried the Warriors to an 89-78 victory over the Marauders.

The Marauders (7-12 overall, 6-8 Northern Sun) had a tremendous night offensively and on the boards. UMary shot 53% from the floor, including an 11-for-22 effort behind the arc that was the team's best mark of the season. The Marauders also held a 32-17 edge in rebounding to outscore the Warriors 12-0 I 2nd chance points.

However UMary committed 16 turnovers to nine for WSU for a 24-10 Warriors advantage in points off turnovers. The Warriors (12-6, 8-5) were also incredibly efficient offensively, shooting 58% from the floor while hitting 14-of-24 3s.

Down by as many as 15 points in the first half, the Marauders closed within 46-40 at intermission. UMary's surge continued in the second half. A Jacob Jackson trey with just over 11 minutes to play in the game gave UMary a 63-56 lead and capped a 41-19 Marauders run. A Lucas Mayer layup later gave the Marauders a 67-58 lead.

After a 14-0 run regained the lead for the Warriors, a Kam Warrens triple and a pair of Kai Huntsberry free throws pulled the Marauders even at 72-72. The rest of the night belonged to the Warriors. Winona State outscored UMary 17-6 the last five minutes to snap the Marauders 2-game win streak. WSU has now won all 13 of its home games against UMary since the series started in 2006-07.

Huntsberry led the Marauders with 25 points. He hit 9-of-14 shots from the floor and was 4-of-7 on 3s. The junior guard also had four rebounds and four assists.

Jackson posted 17 points and six rebounds, going 3-for-5 behind the arc while hitting 6-of-10 shots overall. Mayer was perfect from the field on five shots and finished the game with 11 points and seven rebounds. Davids Atelbauers was 3-for-5 behind the arc and scored 10 points.

Alec Rosner scored a game-high 36 points for Winona State. Luke Martens added 17.
