Waltman, Davies shine on opening night for Marauders

BISMARCK, ND – Madisyn Waltman turned aside nine shots and Emma Davies scored the lone goal of the night for the University of Mary as the Marauders opened the long-awaited 2021 season with a 1-1 draw against visiting MSU Billings.

Over 500 Marauders fans came out to support UMary on a beautiful Labor Day evening a day before the start of fall classes. It was the first home games for the Marauders during their traditional fall season after missing all of the 2020 season due to the pandemic and subsequently playing a limited schedule of four matches last spring.

After a scoreless opening half, Davies gave the Marauders the lead early in the second half. Taking a shot from distance just beyond the left of the box, the senior floated the ball high over the defense and the outstretched arms of leaping MSUB goalkeeper Clare Keenan in the 52nd minute of play.

Waltman and the Marauders defense held the Yellowjackets attack in check until the 74th minute when Jordan Roe found the equalizer on her first goal of the season.

The Yellowjackets - playing their third match of the season - continued to press and generated the final  two shots and both corner kicks triggered in the last ten minutes of regulation, but Waltman made one big save and the two teams went to overtime.

After both teams each had a shot on net in the first extra session, the Yellowjackets had the first scoring opportunity in the second overtime but Waltman turned aside the MSU Billings efforts and kept UMary's chances alive with her ninth save of the game. The Marauders flipped the field and fired the last three shots of the game but two chances just missed the net and the third was stopped by Keenan.

The Yellowjackets (1-1-1) finished with a 14-11 edge in shots, including a 10-6 advantage in shots on frame. Both teams managed four corner kicks and MSUB committed 12 fouls to five for the Marauders (0-0-1). The visitors also had the only two yellow cards of the night.

The Marauders next compete in the Rimrock Classic this weekend, hosted by MSU Billings. UMary first faces Black Hills State University on Thursday, Sept. 9, before once again facing MSU Billings on Saturday, Sept. 11.
