UMary falls just short in upset bid of #1 Augie

BISMARCK, ND – After nearly upsetting the nation's top-ranked team in the opening game, the University of Mary softball came up short in both of their games against Augustana University.

In a game closer than the final score indicates, Augie (27-3, 15-1) got off to a great start when Mary Pardo hit a lead-off home run to start the game. The Vikings added another run the in top of the 5th inning for a 2-0 lead. UMary (4-23 overall, 3-11 Northern Sun) responded in the bottom of the fifth inning after Kaitlyn Alvarado scored on a wild pitch as the Marauders cut the Viking lead in half.

PIVOT POINT

AU exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning and UMary was unable to respond which gave the Vikings a 7-1 win.

Augustana took control of the second game as the Marauders offense never got going. AU scored three runs in the first inning, four runs in the second and three runs in the fourth.

Kaitlyn Alvarado pitched one and two-thirds innings and allowed zero runs and only one hit.

STAT OF THE GAME

Madelynn Trout had the Marauders only hit after she hit the ball off the left-field wall, just missing a home run.

The Marauders compete again at home against Minnesota State University Moorhead at the University of Mary Softball Field on Wednesday, April 21, in a doubleheader starting at 2 pm.
