Early leads fade as Marauders swept at Norther State

ABERDEEN, SD – Despite getting early leads the University of Mary softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Northern State University. UMary lost game one 4-2 and game two 6-1.

The Marauders jumped out in front in the top of the second inning after Devyn Ritz hit a two-run home run to right-center scoring Madelynn Trout.

NSU tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after a two-run home run from freshmen catcher Elly Smith.

PIVOT POINT
The Wolves took the lead in the sixth inning when Makenzie Merritt hit a two-run home run to right field. Mariah Sanchez hit a single in the top of the seventh, but the Marauders were unable to bring her home as they fell 4-2 to NSU.

Mariah Sanchez went 1-for-2 with two walks

Devyn Ritz went 1-for-3 with one HR and two RBIs

Kaitlyn Alvarado pitched six innings, allowing four runs on six hits in a complete game effort

Madelynn Trout went 0-for-1 with two walks and one run scored

Devyn Ritz's home run in the second inning was the first home run of her UMary career.

Brooke De Jonge got the Marauders on the board in the bottom of the third inning hitting a single to left field to score Madelyn Trout. The Wolves responded in the top of the fifth inning, tying the game after a home run from Shelby Novotny. NSU added another run in the fifth after an RBI single from Chanel Siebenthal.

PIVOT POINT
The Wolves continued to pile up runs in the sixth inning scoring two in the inning giving the Wolves a 4-2 lead. A two-run double from Elly Smith in the seventh inning gave NSU the 6-2 win.
