DULUTH, MN – Facing their toughest task of the season against nationally-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth, the visiting University of Mary men's basketball team stayed within striking distance much of the game before the Bulldogs pulled away down the stretch to defeat the Marauders 77-64.
Kai Hunstberry scored 19 points to lead the Marauders in scoring and
Gertautas Urbonavicius added 10 as UMary played its 8
th road game of the season in ten outings. The Marauders (3-7 overall / 2-3 Northern Sun) return home next weekend to host Bemidji State University on Friday, Dec. 17, and the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, Dec. 18.
A Devan Franks 3-point play gave the Marauders a 30-29 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs (11-0, 5-0), ranked 22
nd in the nation, followed with an 11-0 run and took a 42-33 lead into intermission.
Down 14 early in the second half, the Marauders closed their deficit to 47-41 on a pair of treys from
Kam Warrens and Huntsberry and a Warrens basket in the paint but it was a close as UMary would come to UMD the remainder of the game.
Huntsberry added three assists and five rebounds to his 19 points. Urbonavicius knocked down 5-of-9 shots in the game. Warrens hit both trey attempts and had eight points and six rebounds.
Jacob Jackson came off the bench to pair nine points and seven rebounds.
Lincoln Meister led UMD with 13 points, one of three Bulldogs in double digits.
UMD had a big game at the line, making 23-of-26 free throws. UMary, one of the top teams in the NSIC in getting to the line and making free throws, was 5-of-7.
