ST. CLOUD, MN – Despite a strong offensive performance by the University of Mary, the Marauders fell just short in an 83-78 road loss at St. Cloud State University.
Kai Huntsberry torched the Huskies defense for 24 points and UMary shot a season-best 54% from the field in the opening game of the weekend.
Huntsberry surpassed 22 points for the fifth time this season for the Marauders. The NSIC's 5
th leading scorer hit three treys and was 10-of-17 from the floor. The junior point guard added six assists.
Jacob Jackson came off the bench to score 12 points. He hit 4-of-6 shots and nailed a pair of treys.
Josh Sipes also provided a boost off the bench by hitting all three of his shots – including a pair of treys – and scoring eight points.
Kam Warrens added 11 points for UMary and had a team-leading eight rebounds.
The Marauders hit 60% of their shots in the second half, including a 6-for-11 effort behind the arc, and outscored the Huskies 45-40 in the final 20 minutes.
Trailing much of the night, the Marauders overcame a 16-point second half deficit on the power of a 21-8 run to close within 64-61 with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Jackson keyed the run with 10 points and
Kade Amundson scored four of his eight points with back-to-back baskets.
Six times the Marauders (3-6 overall/2-2 NSIC) closed the game to three points. Twice UMary had a defensive stop with an opportunity to reduce their deficit but were unable to score. The last four times the Huskies (5-5/2-2) scored to hold the Marauders at bay.
Caleb Donaldson was unstoppable for the Huskies, making 12-of-13 shots on his way to a game-high 31 points. Anthony Roberts added 20 points and 11 rebounds. SCSU hit 50.8% of its shots and made all 14 free throw attempts. The Marauders were also perfect at the line but had just five attempts.
UMary wraps up its first weekend of back-to-back games at #22 University of Minnesota Duluth at 3:30 pm on Saturday, Dec. 11.
