Early goal sparks Marauders to mid-morning 5-0 win over Panthers

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO – An early goal in an early game after a late night sparked the University of Mary to a 5-0 win over Davenport University on the third and final day of the Lindenwood Showcase.

The Marauders, ranked first in the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2 poll, extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games and improved to 17-2-0-1 on the season. Davenport is 6-4.

The only previous meeting between the Marauders and the Panthers was in the opening game of the 2021 ACHA national tournament, a 6-0 win for reigning national champion UMary.

Back on the ice less than 11 hours after skating to a 2-2 draw with host Lindenwood University, the Marauders scored just 29 seconds into the game. Taking a pass from Marshall Tschida, Garrett Freeman rocketed a low angle shot into the net from the bottom of the left circle to set the tone in a game that started at 9:52 am.

Connor Hanson doubled the UMary lead with an unassisted goal at 15:34 when his shot from atop the right circle eluded Panthers netminder Brenden Bogema and found the net for a 2-0 Marauders advantage entering the first intermission.

Jaren Hugelen took advantage of the only power play opportunity of the day for either team when he converted for the Marauders at 3:37 of the second period. Taking a pass from Seth Cushing, Drew Lenertz fired a shot on net that was initially stopped by Bogema. Hugelen quickly hopped on the rebound and knocked the loose puck into the right side of the net for the third Marauders goal in the game.

UMary struck once again a scant 37 seconds later. Skating through the right circle, Alex Flicek spotted Isaiah Thomas camped out all alone in the slot just outside the crease and slid the puck to his wide open line mate. Without hesitation Thomas swept the puck into the net for a 4-0 lead.

Hugelen wrapped up the Marauders scoring at 13:04 of the second period with an unassisted goal. Stealing the puck behind the Panthers goal, Hugelen slammed home the puck on a wraparound shot just inside the left post.

In addition to Hugelen, Lenertz and Cushing also had multi-point games as the pair had two assists each.

Quinn Ackerman was perfect in net for UMary, stopping all 25 (11-9-5) shots he faced in the game. Brenden Bogema (21 saves) and Drake Deering (13) combined for 34 saves for Davenport.

The Marauders next face Dakota College on Saturday, November 27, in a neutral site game in Dickinson, ND, at the West River Ice Center. Game time is 6 pm Central / 5 pm Mountain. Tickets are available online at www.UMaryTickets.com.
