MANDAN, ND – Six second period goals dashed any hopes of an upset for visiting University of St. Thomas as the University of Mary extended its winning streak to 1- straight with a 9-4 win over the Tommies.
Seth Cushing and
Jaren Hugelen both tallied twice for UMary and seven Marauders scored total as the Marauders completed a weekend sweep of the Tommies.
The defending American Collegiate Hockey Association Men's Division 2 national champion Marauders improve to 14-2 on the season.
Tanner Eskro found the back of the net just 2:58 into the game to open the scoring for the Marauders. Less than three minutes later
Zach Garrett pushed UMary's lead to 2-0.
The Marauders run of 290:57 shutout minutes ended a short time later when Justin Johnson scored for the Tommies at 7:46 of the first period. St. Thomas found the equalizer at 2:51 of the second period on another goal by Johnson.
The rest of the game belonged to the Marauders as UMary scored a flurry of five goals in less than six minutes and six total over the remainder of the second period.
Cushing started the run when he tallied at 6:12. Just 51 seconds later
Marcus Kopp beat Tommies goalkeeper Aidan O'Connor to double the Marauders advantage to 4-2.
Andrew Heckaman made the Tommies pay for taking a penalty when he scored a power play goal at 9:51.
Hugelen continued the UMary scoring flurry with a goal at 11:35. Cushing then stunned the Tommies with his second tally of the day only 21 seconds later.
Garrett Freeman closed out the second period with the Marauders sixth goal of the stanza, a shorthanded score at 13:08. Garrett provided the helper on the goal to give the reigning ACHA M2 Player of the Year his 200
th career point.
Following a pair of Tommies goal in the third, Hugelen tallied at 15:04 to close out the scoring as UMary posted its second-highest goal total of the season.
Hugelen added an assist for a 3-point game. Freeman, Kopp and Eskro had a goal and two assists and
Johnny Witzke added three helpers to give the Marauders five players with a trio of points. Garrett finished with a goal and an assist.
Alex Flicek – the only other UMary player with 200 career points – had two assists.
Kyle Hayden finished with 24 saves in the win for UMary. O'Connor (17 saves) and Sam Haupfauer (9) combined for 26 for St. Thomas.
The UMary specialty units had another big game. The Marauders scored on two of three power play opportunities while the penalty kill unit not only kept the Tommies off the board in six opportunities with the man advantage, they also scored a goal shorthanded. For the year UMary has allowed three power play goals in 16 games.
The Marauders begin a run of five straight road games with a trio of contests Nov. 19-21 at the Lindenwood University Showcase in Maryland Heights, MO. UMary opens the weekend against Liberty University before facing host Lindenwood and Davenport. UMary defeated both Liberty and Davenport at the 2021 ACHA national tournament.
