BISMARCK, ND – In a meeting between two of the top teams in the Northern Sun, the University of Mary was unable to match the firepower of #25 Minnesota State University in a 3-0 loss to the Mavericks. Minnesota State moved atop the Northern Sun standings while UMary maintained its hold on 5
th place.
On a drizzly afternoon, the Marauders and the Mavericks were unable to solve one another's defenses until Minnesota State scored the opening goal in the 32
nd minute when Tia Martin found the back of the net from the top right of the goal box.
The Mavericks tacked on two goals in the second half to pull away. Nadia Lowry connected from in close in the 54
th minute before Maille Mattis added a goal from distance, striking from just outside the penalty area.
Bottled up all day, the Marauders were unable to generate a shot from inside the penalty area. All seven UMary attempts came in the second half with five shots fired on frame. Minnesota State held an 8-7 edge in shots, taking four in each half. Both teams had five corner kick attempts and UMary was whistled for 10 fouls to eight for Minnesota State.
Mackenzie Rath finished with five saves for the Mavericks. Making her first start for UMary,
Molly Fischer was credited with one save while facing pressure all game.
Six different Marauders combined for seven shots in the game, who are 8-4-3 overall and 7-3-2 in the Northern Sun. The loss was the first for UMary at home, where the Marauders are now 4-1-2.
With three regular season games remaining the Marauders are three points out of fourth place. Eight teams qualify for the NSIC tournament and the top four teams host opening round games.
Next up for UMary is a visit to Bemidji State University on Friday, Oct. 29. The Beavers are currently second in the NSIC standings.
The Marauders are then back home for a meeting with the University of Minnesota Crookston on Halloween, the final home game of the regular season for UMary.
