LYNCHBURG, VA – Looking to rebound for their first loss of the year, the University of Mary dominated the shot chart but not the scoreboard in a 4-1 loss at Liberty University. In a meeting between two of the top American Collegiate Hockey Association programs, the Marauders pumped 47 shots on net while the Flames took just 20.
UMary held a modest 13-9 edge in shots after the first period but it was Liberty who held a two-goal lead. With the Marauders hunting for a goal on their only power play of the night, the Flames stunned UMary with a shorthanded goal by Josh Harrell at 8:59. Just 123 seconds later John George doubled the Flames lead to 2-0.
Tanner Eskro breathed life into the Marauders midway through the second period, finding the net at 8:59 to cut the UMary deficit in half. With both teams vying for the next goal, it was the Flames who struck again when Josh Wagner tallied to increase the Liberty lead to 3-1.
UMary attempted to grind out the needed goals but Liberty goalkeeper Dakota Cyhaniuk stood tall and turned away 20 Marauders shots in the third period and 47 total saves for the game. The Flames closed out the scoring with an empty net shorthanded goal by Trevor Granzo.
The Marauders (5-2 overall) and the Flames wrap up their 3-game series on Saturday, Oct, 16, at 7:30 pm ET / 6:30 pm.
