BISMARCK, ND – A balanced scoring attack featuring four players in double digits and an impressive defensive effort earned the University of Mary men's basketball team a weekend split with visiting University of Minnesota Crookston.
Trever Kaiser posted 18 points and
Wyatt Carr added 15 to lead the Marauders in a 73-60 win over the Golden Eagles.
UMC scored first before a Carr triple gave UMary a 3-2 advantage in the initial minute of play. The Marauders never relinquished the lead the remainder of the contest. Despite not having a run in the game bigger than six points, the Marauders led 37-28 at half and held an 18-point advantage late in the game.
One of the top scorers in the Northern Sun, Kaiser was deadly from deep. The junior guard hit a pair of treys early to supercharge the Marauders offense out of the gate. He finished a scintillating 5-of-7 behind the arc on his way to 18 points. He also had four rebounds and two assists.
Carr knocked down three treys and contributed a season-high 15 points.
Matthew Kreklow posted his second double double of the season, pairing 11 points and 10 rebounds. The all-NSIC forward also delivered five assists on the night.
Making his first start for the Marauders, redshirt freshman
Matthew Johnson delivered 12 points and three assists while committing just two turnovers. He was 2-for-3 on 3s and made both free throws.
Kam Warrens and
Lucas Mayer provided scoring punch off the bench, posting six points each. Warrens added five boards and Mayer three on a night the Marauders held a 39-30 edge in rebounding.
Leonard Dixon led UMC with 16 points, connecting on four treys and adding eight rebounds. Josh Dilling added 15 points and six assists and Ibu Jassey-Demba had 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Marauders shot a solid 48.1% for the game from the floor, including a 44% (11-for-25) night behind the arc. Defensively UMary held UMC to 36.77% shooting for the night and a 10-of-28 effort on 3s.
This is the fourth straight weekend split for the Marauders, who are 4-6 overall and 4-4 in the Northern Sun and fourth in the NSIC North standings. UMC slips to 1-7 and 2-8.
UMary continues its four-game home stand next weekend when nationally-ranked Northern State University visits the McDowell Activity Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6.
