BISMARCK, ND - University of Mary guard Lauren Rotunda had a season-high 21 points in the Marauders narrow 58-53 loss to visiting Bemidji State University.
UMary and BSU played even in the first quarter as neither team could take control of the game, ending the period in a 14-14 tie. The Beavers took control in the second quarter and held a 30-23 lead over the Marauders at the half.
UMary cut BSU's lead to six in the third quarter as the Marauders trailed the Beavers 45-39 after three. UMary tied the game at 46-46 with 5:55 remaining in the game but BSU gained control down the stretch to earn the victory.
Senior guard Macy Williams had 11 points and three assists while getting four steals. Rotunda had eight rebounds to go along with her 21 points.
Freshmen Zoe Velde and Hallie Schweitzer both had a career-high in scoring. Schweitzer had seven points and four rebounds. Velde had five points and two assists.
Brooklyn Bachmann led the Beavers with 24 points and seven assists.
The Marauders were outrebounded by the Beavers 34-32. UMary won the turnover battle as they had 14 compared to BSU, who had 15.
The Marauders shot 40.4% from the field, making 30% from behind the arc and going 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. The Beavers shot 45.1% from the field, shooting 33.3% from three and going 6-of-12 from the free-throw line.
UMary (1-5, 1-3 in the NSIC) next visits the University of Minnesota Crookston (2-6, 2-4 in the NSIC) on Friday, January 29, at 5:30 pm.
